Why are MALINNA° products created without emulsifiers?
If you’ve been using MALINNA° for a while, you probably know that we approach skin health differently than most natural (and even conventional) beauty brands. There are many reasons why we create our products in our own unique way. We simply believe that it’s better – for your skin and for the environment. Although emulsifiers are commonly used in cosmetics, they can have a negative impact on your skin.
What are emulsifiers and how do they affect the skin?
Emulsifiers are ingredients used in creams, serums, cleansing gels, and other water-based products. They allow water and oil components to be combined into one stable mixture. For the production of common cosmetics, where water and oil are combined, an emulsifier is essential.
However, their molecular structure is very similar to the substances that form the basis of soaps and cleaning products – which makes them great cleaning aids. But when you imagine that these substances remain on the skin in products that are not rinsed off, it no longer makes sense.
The skin barrier is made up of proteins and lipids – and emulsifiers can disrupt it. Repeated disruption increases moisture loss and reduces the skin’s natural protection, making it easier for irritants and microorganisms to penetrate. The result can be irritation, inflammation or skin sensitivity.
There are several types of emulsifiers that affect the skin in different ways. For example, the well-known sulfates are among the most aggressive. But even gentler ingredients such as cetearyl alcohol , stearic acid , glyceryl stearate , or ceteareth-20 have been proven to disrupt skin lipids and the protective barrier function.
Moreover, they can cause allergic reactions – and many people are hypersensitive to some emulsifiers without knowing it. Given that they are found in most common beauty products and we use them from a young age, we expose our skin to them repeatedly and in large quantities. And with the trend of ever-expanding beauty routines, their occurrence is multiplying.
MALINNA° without emulsifiers
MALINNA°'s goal is not to constantly expand the portfolio, but to offer minimalist yet functional care that supports skin health comprehensively. It makes no sense to leave substances that behave similarly to cleansing ingredients on your skin all day (and night).
That's why all our products are created without the use of emulsifiers . Our creams do not contain water - they are based on natural oils and vegetable butters, which are very close to the natural protective layer of the skin in their lipid composition. However, thanks to our special production processes, they are easily absorbed into the skin.
Another significant benefit is that MALINNA° creams are highly concentrated , as they do not contain water. A very small amount is enough for application (we recommend applying to damp skin so that you do not waste more than necessary).
Our creams – and other products – support a healthy skin microbiome, without paying for a product that is mostly water. This allows us to use only the highest quality, often hand-picked, certified organic ingredients and fully develop their effects on skin health.
